Amy E. Totten always puts herself in the shoes of her opponent. As a former prosecutor, she knows the importance of being prepared for trial and seeing all sides of a case, especially when her clients are dealing with difficult life-altering events.

During her two decades of legal practice, Amy has handled thousands of cases from traffic cases and simple support matters to intricate divorce cases, child sexual assault crimes and capital murder cases. She draws on this wealth of experience for every legal issue that she tackles. Because of her years of work as a prosecutor, Amy honed her investigative skills using every tool available to build her case. She implemented and oversaw the special grand jury system in Loudoun County, allowing prosecutors to thoroughly examine challenging evidence/witnesses and revive unsolved cold cases. Amy uses that investigative experience to develop a powerful case and strategy in complex asset divorces, challenging child custody disputes and contested domestic relations matters. Amy’s background has also helped her to recognize when it is in a client’s best interest to collaborate with specialists such as business evaluators, forensic accountants, and health professionals.

Though Amy is often able to get her clients the outcome they desire in the courtroom, she is also a veteran negotiator. She understands the complexity of her client’s cases from both a legal perspective, and on an emotional level. She helps clients balance their own interests—relationships with their children, financial stability and the costs of litigation. When settlement is a client’s goal, Amy utilizes various tools such as property settlement agreements, mediation, and conferences with opposing counsel to negotiate a positive resolution for her client. Just as she assisted crime victims and their families over the years, Amy guides her clients through the legal process with compassion, personal attention, and patience. She knows how to resolve the problems that her clients face so they can move on with their lives.
